Tom Peter Johnson 1850-1943

Tom Peter Johnson, known affectionately as "Uncle Pete," was born in Montgomery County, Texas on 16 Oct 1850 and lived to be one of the oldest citizens of that area.  He lived in the timber and lumbering community of Egypt, Texas.
    Egypt, Texas is in Montgomery County; location is 30° 13' 15"N at 95° 33' 41"W
    As reported in the Houston Chronicle, '"People tell me 92 years is a long time to live," Pete said, "but it does not seem do long to me.  But now I have rheumatism in my legs and have a hard time getting around."'
    Uncle Pete died on 15 Jan 1943 and was buried at the Tillis Preirie Cemetery.  At his funeral, he was mourned by more than 150 descendants including 34 grandchildren; 85 great-grandchildren and 12 great-grand-children.

Montgomery County's Oldest Citizen Has 92d Birthday
T.P.Johnson Has Lived in Section All His Life.

    Conroe, Oct. 17. - T. P. Johnson who was 93 Friday, will celebrate Sunday with a birthday party at the home of his grandson, Charles McDonald, near whom he lives in the Egeypt Community between Conroe and Magnolia.
    He does not know how many of the children, grandchildren, and great-children will be there, but probably not as many as usual at the annual affair - because this was has broken things up too much, he says.
    "People tell me 92 years is a long time to live," he says "but it does not seem so long to me.  But now I have rheumatism in my legs and have a hard time getting around," is the way he sums up his age.

    Mr. Johnson is believed to be the oldest living man in Montgomery County.
    Born at Mount Creek, south of Keenan, about six miles from his present home, he is proud of having lived in Montgomery County all his life.

Pioneer Resident Of County Dies In Local Hospital
    Tom Peter Johnson, 93 one of the oldest citizens, passed away at 8:25 p.m. Saturday, January 15, in the Montgomery County Hospital.  He was born October 16, 1850, at Mount Creek, south of Keenan, and about six miles from his last residence in the Egypt community.
    Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. at the Klein Funeral Home Chapel, Tomball on Sunday, January 16, with internment at the Tillis Preirie Cemetery at 4:00 p.m.
    Pallbearers were selected from his many grandsons as follows: Allen and Jim Johnson, Clyde and Earl Ivey, Sam, Pete and Gee Johnson and Buddy Mueller.  He was mourned by more than 150 descendants and an immense host of friends, to whom he was known affectionately as "Uncle Pete."
    Mr. Johnson is survived by on son, Johnnie Johnson of Oklahoma community; two daughters Mrs. Fannie McDonald of Egypt and Mrs. Lizzie Ivey, of Houston; 34 grandchildren; 85 great-grandchildren and 12 great-grand-children; a brother, J.H. Johnson and a sister, Angie Grey, both of Buffalo.
    When he was a boy, there was nothing but woods where Conroe is now located, and he saw the first saloon and lumber mill of the town.  Amoung his recollections was a picture of Houston when the town was nothing more than a mudhole.
    Mr. Johnson was married when he was 20 and was the father of nine children, six of whom preceded him in death.
